from discussions to date night

I love transitioning an article of clothing from day to evening.  By changing the styling you have a completely different outfit and it's a fun way to be inspired from your existing wardrobe.  I remixed this army green jacket and wore it with black pants and a slouchy hat for an Ef Magazine editorial meeting and later with a LBD and statement necklace for date night.

My man and I have been dating almost two years, and have lived together for almost a year and a half (we didn't waste any time!) And by living together I mean cramming into his one bedroom condo with my two furry babies, 53 dresses and extensive shoe collection.  Friends have commented that if they lived in such tight quarters with their man, they would break up in no time at all.  So how do we deal with lack of personal space?  Date nights.  We plan (ok I plan, he brings his wallet) at least one fun activity a week that gets us out of the condo.  The date is usually something creative accompanied by a meal so we can chat and catch up.  (Because if you live with your partner you know how easy it is to become passing ships in the night!) Last week we went out for a yummy sushi dinner followed by amateur comedy night (this is what I wore) and over the weekend we attended poetry reading (something that's been on my to-do list for ages).  I look forward to our date nights all week and love coming up with unique, budget friendly activities that give us quality time together.  It rejuvenates our romance and keeps me from running him over with the vacuum (don't ask-it stems from an irrational childhood fear of vacuums -thanks Mum!)

Other date night activites have included (from L-R) Indian food followed by theatre, Greek tapas, Southwestern dinner and drinks, support local businesses networking event (because the couple that networks together, stays together!)

Do you think regularly scheduled date nights are important in relationships? What's your favourite date night activity?

  1. I think date nights are important... unfortunately, we don't do them often enough. Usually our "date night" is relaxing at home on a Friday night with a movie or tv, since we're both so tired by the end of the week. Thanks for the inspiration to get out of the house!

  2. Date nights are definitely important to keep the spark alive. We like to go to concerts, dinner, or just walking around Target. Just being together and reconnecting is important, especially with kids and busy work schedules. Congrats on almost 2 years! Heather

  3. This is a great idea and a cute look for date night. I wish we planned date nights a little better we always seem to end up with someone else tagging along on our date nights. Never un-welcomed I think we're just really good at making people not feel like a third wheel. I should try to plan us more date nights like this. ;)

  4. My husband and I do date night every week. It's a must. We barely get time to eat dinner together during the weekdays and so it's important to us to dedicate one night out of the week to do just that - spend time with each other without any distractions.

  5. I would love a regularly scheduled date night! But I guess our Sunday night wine, popcorn, and a movie rental is pretty close.

  7. I think date nights are important - unfortunately they're a rare occurence around here. My husband and I barely see each other (awake)! Maybe that's why we still act like newlyweds after 6 years together. Haha!

That is an amazing statement necklace.

  9. You're so right about date nights. They really are important for staying connected. I've already got the next one planned--seeing Breaking Dawn Part 1! Hey, Chris likes Twilight too, so it's not just for my benefit.

  11. Great looks and I love your nail polish color! Date nights are very important. When my hubby and I moved in together we were also crammed into a tiny apartment and we went out a lot just to get out of the apartment!

  13. I LOVE the first outfit and that blazer highlights your teeny tiny waist! I love low key nights just making a nice dinner together, going for a walk on the beach, and renting a movie. I also love going out for drinks with other couple friends, or taking spur of the moment weekend trips.

  17. Its a good thing we have 2 bedroom apartment and no fur-babies, we always try to have a regular date night but it rarely happens. Maybe were having a date now - we're both on the couch, eating oranges, browsing blogs.

  19. hmm, we actually don't have proper date nights (we even don't see each other every day :D) but weekends give the chance to go somewhere, for example trips, eating out, sometimes going to the cinema etc. we live in such a small town, so there's not much to do here. and our time is limited because of working every day :P
anyway, I really like your evening outfit! the dress is beautiful with that necklace :)

I love the chunky accessories too, very funky look. You are such a wonderful girlfriend, I'm sure your guy is very thankful for you! our datenights sound very fun.

  23. I agree, date nights are important. My boyfriend and I have been dating for six, living together for three, years and it helps to get out of the house and spend time together. Otherwise we just sit in our respective rooms, him playing videogames or studying, me watching tv shows that he hates, or blogging. It's good to spice things up!

  24. hhow cute are you in your beret?

  25. I love your rings! I think date nights are super important - my fiance and I try to take 1-2 nights per week just for us to go get food or just lounge around without computers/phones/etc. It's nice :) And ummm I am basically OBSESSED with Indian food. Every time we eat out that's what I want.

  26. First of all, I love that green jacket with the LBD and brown accessories! I especially love the pop of color from your nails!

And yes!! I totally agree that date nights are important. Before having kids, the Hubs & I regularly schedule a date night out every couple of weeks. Now, that we have kids, it's a little harder to go out, but we still have special date nights in, where we order take-out, pop in a movie and snuggle on the couch. Or we'll eat at the table, just the two of us and chat for a while. Or my favorite is when we play scrabble together. =)

  27. Adoring both looks. Love how you showed the versatility of the pieces.

I, alas, do not get a date night very often. With two little one's in the mix it is a bit pricey. We are planning to set a schedule of sorts for the new year to carve out some time:)I agree that it is important.

  28. I wish my husband and I could go date-nighting more often. We have very weird, ever-changing schedules, so we can't schedule a consistent day to do that. But we always plan to spend at least one whole day together every week. It doesn't necessarily have to be spent out, but that's because we're homebodies :)

    I LOVE that heart ring!

  29. i love switching an outfit from day to night too, and you did such a great job with this outfit. :)

i'm not in a relationship, but i think it's a good idea to set aside a time weekly for date night -- what's better is if you change what you do every week or so. :)

  35. Good idea! I think one of the reasons my relationship fell apart was because we failed to do this. Although we didn't live together, we'd usually spend 3+ days straight with each other, and we never really did any activities out of the norm. The good times I look back on were when we went on "dates:" to the beach, to a movie, to dinner, etc. There are just so few of them to remember!

  36. We moved in really quickly too. And it worked out well for us.

I like how you did daytime to date night. Very nice. I really like both looks.
