microwavable fedora

Top- Gap; Shorts, Fedora, Shoes, Purse, Necklace & Bracelets-Thrifted; Ring- Smart Set; Nail Polish- Rich in Spirit by Nicole by OPI

I love hats as I think they're the perfect accessory to funk up any outfit! My black & grey fedoras are great but I wanted something lighter for the summer months.  When I saw this straw fedora for $4.99 at my local thrift store I scooped it up but quickly got to thinking about hygiene and how buying a used hat is almost like buying second hand undergarments (eeek!).  I still really wanted the hat so my Dad suggested I microwave it to ward off any unwanted critters (double eeek!) So in went the hat for 15 second heated intervals, followed by a quick tumble in the dryer.  Good riddance, used hat creepy crawlies!

I wore this outfit today (wow, actually posting on the day I wear the ensemble, that's rare!) while furniture and appliance shopping with the man for our new house (we move in July 31, I can't wait!) The sales guy told my man he looked like a University Professor and I looked like a designer (maybe in our next lives!)

Have you ever bought a used hat? What are your second hand no-no's?

  1. Emily I love the fedora and i can't believe how good it still looks after all that heat..lol But I guess better safe than sorry.
My mother in law has always told me not to buy second hand shoes but I have just cleaned them with baby wipes soaked with rubbing alcohol.

  2. The title of this post made me laugh! But the fedora is super adorable and I suppose a microwave would be a good bet in getting rid of any creepy crawlies. Whatever does the trick! Pink is such a pretty color on you! And love the shoes paired with the shorts. As far as second hand wares, I always stay away from bathing suits, pajamas, work out clothes, or other intimate items.

  5. emily, currently i don't have any thrifted hats. my father-n law washes his baseball caps in the dishwasher. i don't know how a straw hat would hold up. i'm envious of your fedora collection. i don't own any. my guy had one that he wore to death, but he hasn't found a replacement. everyone that tried it on, looked good in it too. holy fedora hats tonight, at the bar, seeing bands play. they were everywhere! also, i don't live close to my family. i live 3 states away. i've only had 2 visits this year. i just take lots of photos when i do see them. i also steal pics off their facebook. i post them on my blog because they read it. i also want them to know they are in my heart. :)

  6. I totally love the striped top + fedora combo because that cute pink is just perfect, to be honest. and what a lovely pastel necklace!
when it comes to thrifting, never say never because you might find something actually "new" from there. something that otherwise would be a big no-no. though I think I haven't bought second hand hats yet..

  13. I LOVE this look--the pink and the hat are so much fun! I'm not much of a hat person, but as my hair gets longer I keep thinking I should give them a try. The microwave tip is such a good idea!

  14. I love thrifting basically anything (except intimates) and occassionally I will stray away from shoes.

Hats on the other hand have become a new favourite, I generally throw them in the dryer for a cycle on handwash anything delicate,

Neat trick with the microwave though!

One of my daily joys is reading the lovely comments you leave. It may take a day or two (or three, depending on how hectic life gets!) but I will stop by your slice of the blogosphere soon! xo Emily
